Purpose: Depression, anxiety and fatigue are among the most troublesome problems that impact the quality of life in breast cancer patients who are under active anti-cancer treatment. This study explores the influence of yoga on the three above symptoms in breast cancer patients undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy at a cancer center. Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted in a cancer center of southern Taiwan. A sample of 60 non-metastatic breast cancer participants was recruited. Participants were randomly assigned into either the experimental (n = 30) or the control (n = 30). A 60-min yoga (plus 2 times standard care) was implemented 2 times per week for 8 weeks as the intervention for the participants in the experimental group. The yoga exercise for breast cancer patients, consists of pranayama (breathing exercises) and 10 gentle healing yoga asanas and meditation. Assessment tools include Profile of Mood State and Brief Fatigue Inventory-Taiwan Form. Assessments were done at baseline, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks after initiation of chemotherapy and 4 weeks after completion of chemotherapy. Results: The yoga exercise did reduce the experimental group significantly in fatigue and the level of fatigue interfering with their everyday life among breast cancer patients with appropriate baseline value ( .05) and anxiety (F=2.7, p> .05). Conclusion: 8-week yoga exercise is effective at reducing fatigue status in patients with breast cancer. Oncology nurses may apply healing yoga to help improve the fatigue status among breast cancer patients undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy.
