This research used chitosan of different degree of deacetylation (85, 99%) and coated, in its gel form, on the surface of polypropene non-woven cloth. The purpose was to understand the effect on the coated cloths’ adsorption capability for heavy metal ions. Since non-woven cloth is highly porous, coating gelled chitosan on its surface may provide large surface for heavy metal ion adsorptions. This research carried out series of adsorption experiments. The four commonly encountered heavy metal ions in the industrial waste water, Cu+2、Cd+2、Cr+3、Pb+2 were dissolved in water, and adsorption kinetics was observed in water for 90 min. For all of the above listed heavy metal ions, the adsorption equilibriums were developed within 10 min. Comparing the adsorption rate and capacity, the sequential order was Cu+2>Cd+2>Pb+2>Cr+3. Using two kinds of deacetylation of chitosan coating and various of non-woven cloth, the trends are consistent with the amount of heavy metal adsorption (Cu+2> Cd+2> Pb+2> Cr+3), and increased number of non-woven piece would increase the effect of heavy metals adsorption; Increase the degree of deacetylation of chitosan would significantly increase the adsorption of Pb+2 ion, slightly enhanced the adsorption toward Cd+2 and Cr+3, and almost no effect upon the adsorption of Cu+2. The volumetric efficiency can be increased because of this. Thus the chitosan coated non-woven cloth has potential applications in waste water treatment.
