The thesis is based on the development and features of Wen Zheng-Ming’s painting style. In the painting academia, Wen’s style has often been regarded as “rough Wen and fine Shen” and “rough Wen and fine Wen.” The former means it is unusual that Wen’s works are characterized by the extreme rough and Shen’s works are characterized by the extreme fine; therefore, the former is particularly valuable and rare. The latter, Wen’s painting works are divided into two categories, rough and fine. Because these formulations directly have an effect on the modern research scholars who explain Wen’s paintings, with this in mind, in the first chapter, I will investigate the earliest period which “rough Wen and fine Shen” and “rough Wen and fine Wen” appeared. In addition, I will look back the catalogues and researches regarding Wen’s painting from Ming Dynasty to contemporary. In the second chapter, the emphasis is on the method of style analysis to establish Wen’s early, middle, later terms of important creations and his individual features. Furthermore, the thesis will explain the problems that may be caused after Wen’s paintings are classified into “rough” and “fine.” In the third chapter, the rest of minor problems about Wen’s features are discussed, and the thesis focuses on the analysis of “Lofty Leisure beneath a Sheer Cliff” of 1519 and “Old Trees and Cold Streems” of 1549 that presented “rough”. Then, I will summarize the “rough” style and features which was developed from the artists in late Ming Dynasty, Chien Ku and Liu Yuanqi. In the fourth chapter, the focus is on defining the similarities and dissimilarities of Wen’s style that treated by the descriptive authors in Ming and Qing Dynasty, and illustrating the origin of “rough Wen and fine Shen” and “rough Wen and fine Wen” and theirs popular age.
