Development of the Love Relationship Beliefs Scale for College Students

The goal of this research is to develop Love Relationship Beliefs Scale for college students and analyze different situations of love relationship beliefs under different background variables. In order to achieve the goal, the first thing is to review the relative papers and documents, build the theoretical base of the research, induce college students’ love relationship beliefs of localized item analysis through interviews and open questionnaire, draft the questions according to the scale, do the analysis of experts validity and then develop the Love Relationship Beliefs Pretest Scale for college students. In pretesting, the subjects are 283 college students from five colleges in Taiwan. Through testing, gathering information and factor analysis, the formal scale was born. Via questionnaire survey to collecting information, I have 972 college students of Taiwan as valid feedback data by a cluster sample and purposive sample. By SPSS18.0, the data is under Exploratory Factor Analysis and internal consistency tests. The data is also analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA to understand different situations of background variables in Love Relationship Beliefs. The following are the results of the research: First are the results of the creating of Love Relationship Beliefs Scale for college students. 1. There are 61 questions. The content of the scale contains equity, uniqueness, respect self space, trust, destiny, body intimacy, soul mate and exclusiveness. 2. The scale has great reliability and validity. In reliability, Cronbach α of grand total is .90 and Cronbach α of every aspect are .73 to .91. In validity, factor loadings are .46 to .86 and total variances is 52.52%. 3. This Love Relationship Beliefs Scale contains "uniqueness” and exclusiveness” and these two themes show Taiwan college students’ characters. 4. In this Love Relationship Beliefs Scale, people who get extreme scores in “respect self space” and “destiny” may have dysfunctional relationship beliefs. Second is the analysis of college students’ love relationship beliefs. 1. Nowadays college students of Taiwan focus on “respect self space” and “soul mate” in love relationship beliefs. 2. Although college students of Taiwan agree “destiny” in love relationship beliefs and the level is low. Third is to indentify difference of different background variables and love relationship beliefs. 1. College students of Education and college students of Humanities and Arts are different from college students of Business in “respect self space.” 2. The juniors score higher than freshmen in “respect self space.” 3. Male and female college students have significantly difference in Love Relationship Beliefs Scale. 4. College students of different parental marital situations have no significantly difference in Love Relationship Beliefs Scale. 5. College students of different love relationship situations have significantly difference in Love Relationship Beliefs Scale. 6. College students of different times of love experiences have significantly difference in Love Relationship Beliefs Scale. Finally, the results of the research could offer useful suggestions for patricidal applications and future researches.
