This research examined the impact of students’ learning habits on their career planning efficacy. Students studying in Shih Hsin University were sampled as subjects. In this research, learning habits was the independent variable, which was further divided into the following sub-dimensions: personality traits, self-concept, learning motivation, and values towards learning. Career planning efficacy was the dependent variable with sub-dimensions including self-understanding and assessment, goal identification, future planning, problem-solving capability, and career information collection. The questionnaire survey method was used. The questionnaire data were analyzed to test research hypotheses. The results show that learning habits and related sub-dimensions not only have impact on career planning efficacy, they are also predictors of subjects’ career planning efficacy and its sub-dimensions, with the highest predictability on the values towards learning. These results imply that while university students’ learning habits are indeed vital, the learning process before university education, from elementary school to high school, exerts a more significant influence on nourishing and shaping student’s values towards learning. Therefore, if we are to improve university students’ quality in Taiwan, students’ values towards learning should be positively nurtured and correctly guided during their pre-university education. Despite some research limitations, we suggest that, based on different educational needs, universities should develop career development inventories for students and alumni respectively. In practice, schools could leverage students’ career planning efficacy to organize programs or workshops in order to equip them with suitable capabilities for advanced degrees and various work environments. Moreover, results from alumni’s career development inventory could be used to establish career-choice and personality-trait databases for the schools’ references. We hope that the results could also be useful information for the education authorities to formulate policies that would strengthen Taiwan’s competitiveness in the world in terms of talent capital.
