If we say, Industrial Revolution was originated in the invention of the steam engine, which led the human beings into the mechanical era, a turning point of the brand new life style, then, we should not even ignore the value of the existence of the locomotive. Besides using a steam engine as the basic momentum, the speed that no one had ever experienced before and the huge, eye-catching appearance, locomotive left a scary impression in people’ minds. However, it still has been one of the various machines being the closest to the ordinary human life. So it’s not weird, if we consider it as an ertremely significant symbol during the technological progress. One of the value of the literature is reflects the reality. As soon as the locomotive was invented, it also became a theme when people writing, not to mentioned for those writers, who observed carefully how the world changes with the locomotive. Their opinions and visions, the disaster or the potential crisis hidden behind the locomotives, arrogant attitude and behaviors of human beings result from technology, or, train as a spot showing social levels or human nature and warmth, all these above are the possibilities of what kind of meanings the locomotive in the literature may have. Thus, this master thesis focuses on the interpretation of the locomotive, which is mainly based on the German literature, and the generalization of it. Hope more and more valuable studies and discussions will be attracted by this shallow introduction in the future.
