A Study of Chinese Pragmatic Marker Ranhou in Different Text Types

Popis: | 99 The aim of the present study is to investigate the relation between pragmatic finctions of Chinese pragmatic marker Ranhou and text types, and this study runs SAS program to do statistical analysis. The data were collected from live recordings, radio programs, and casual conversations by native speakers of Mandarin Chinese. Moreover, there are three data sets of the current study: formal, planned texts, formal, unplanned texts, and informal, unplanned texts. Formal, planned texts were drawn from speech and lectures. Formal, unplanned texts were drawn from call-in programs. Informal, unplanned texts were drawn from casual conversations. Besides, the first 150 tokens of pragmatic marker Ranhou of each data set were selected and analyzed. Based on the statistical results, it can be seen that the pragmatic function uses of Ranhou have closer relation to discourse plannedness than discourse formality. Specifically, discourse plannedness definitely affects how speakers use pragmatic marker Ranhou to convey their potential communicative intentions. Besides, this study also found out salient features of pragmatic marker Ranhou in different text types. In formal, planned discourse, speakers tend to use pragmatic marker Ranhou to express successive ideas and to get listener’s attention. In formal, unplanned discourse, speakers tend to use pragmatic marker Ranhou to contrast with prior discouse, to hold the floor, to retrieve the floor, to supplement other’s explanation, to trigger a question, and to get listener’s attention. In informal, unplanned discourse, speakers tend to use pragmatic marker Ranhou to express successive ideas. |
