To enhance the competitiveness of Taiwanese software companies, it is important to deploy high maturity levels of CMMI and keep improving their software process performance. However, in Taiwan, only 3.4% of CMMI certificated companies are of high maturity levels, far below worldwide average 9.4%, 38.5% in India, and 6.4% in mainland China. The main objective of this research is to find out the key factors of deploying CMMI maturity level 4 (ML4), which are valuable for software companies who is interested in CMMI high maturity. This research conducts a real case study of a famous Taiwanese software company, which has deployed CMMI ML4 successfully, to investigate its considerations, experiences, and implementation procedures. According to the case study, we conclude the key success factors of deploying CMMI ML4 are: (1) highly support from top managers, (2) continuous efforts from EPG team, (3) effective assistance from coaching experts, (4) allying with other companies to solve problems together, (5) reducing internal resistance, and (6) carrying out the system through organizational restructuring, while the critical barriers are: (1) inability of statistical techniques and skills, (2) poor quality of historical data, (3) difficulty in collecting project data (4) inappropriate organization and work division, (5) uncertain to appraisal requirements, and (6) lack of previous example to refer. In order to increase the success rate, we suggest quantitatively realize current processes of ML2 and ML3, well prepare for organizational changes and management adjustments due to ML4, and make quantitative management into real utilization.
