Popis: | 99 Tai-Chi is composed of nature and science. It is a vital concept in Chinese intellectual history. The symbol of Tai-Chi is a classic Chinese element, which has been widely recognized and adopted by many countries. It is a cultural symbol with Eastern implications. The Tai-Chi diagram represents Eastern philosophy, also it is one of the symbols which have had created for long in Chinese traditional culture. A symbol/logo represents a company or a brand that even expresses an enterprise’s infinite spirit. The topic in this study is those symbols designed with ‘Tai-Chi’ meaning or ‘Tai-Chi icon’ during 1924 and 2010. In total there were 511 effective samples. It analyzes the forms and the cultural connotations of ‘Tai-Chi symbol’ design from the aspects of design principles, visual performance and semiotics. There are three key sections in this study: (a) the outline of Tai-Chi diagram, the form/the presentation of symbol design and the classification of iconic pattern, (b) the contents analysis, which covers the composition and meanings of Tai-Chi symbol, the form/the presentation and the application of Tai-Chi symbol and also the application analysis of iconic symbol in making Tai-Chi symbol, (c) the semiotic analysis of Tai-Chi symbol. Mainly based on the semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure, this study analyses the composition of Tai-Chi symbol from the aspects of ‘signifier and ‘signified’ and ‘paradigm and syntagm’. The finding shows that the variants of Tai-Chi diagram are the majority in composition form of Tai-Chi symbol. It prove that in the design of Tai-Chi symbol the ‘implications’ of Tai-Chi outweigh its ‘iconic pattern’. In shape, the main appearance form of Tai-Chi symbol is round shape and in terms of English letter font, the letter ‘S’ takes the largest portion. When being sorted by industrial segments, ‘leisure industry’ adopts most Tai-Chi symbol. In applications, ‘human’ is largely used for individual topics. In iconic symbol segments, ‘nature symbolization’ takes the largest share in designing Tai-Chi iconic symbol. The focus of this study is individual symbol design, which is different from other general researches about symbols. The study results can be further utilized by or provided as a reference to relevant researchers and designers of logo or iconic symbol. |
