The Effects of Picture Books on Cultural Knowledge and English Learning Attitude of Elementary School Students

Popis: | 99 The purpose of this study aimed to investigate the effects of the cultural instruction via English picture books on Taiwanese sixth-graders’ cultural knowledge and English learning attitude. Two groups consisting of 70 sixth-graders at an elementary school in Taipei County participated in the experimental programs and were assigned to the experimental group and the control group. The 35 students in the experimental group received the cultural instruction via English picture books. The other 35 students in the control group received the traditional cultural instruction. The experimental programs lasted for ten weeks, and two twenty-minute lessons were conducted weekly. The instructions were implemented four hundred minutes in total. Research data were collected through diverse instruments, such as the pre/post American Food Culture Tests and English Learning Attitude Scale and the questionnaire for learning interest in the cultural instruction via English Picture Books. The data were then calculated and analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent-samples t test and pair-samples t tests. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1. The experimental group performed better than the control group but did not reach the level of significance in the American Food Culture Test. 2. The experimental group performed significantly better than the control group in English Learning Attitude Scale. 3. The experimental group improved their cultural knowledge and English learning attitude significantly, but the control group only improved their cultural knowledge significantly. 4. The questionnaire for learning interest and open questions showed that the experimental group was highly interested and had positive attitude in the cultural instruction via English picture books. Finally, based on the results of this study, some suggestions were offered for teachers who are interested in the implementation of the cultural instruction via English picture books and for educators who might conduct future studies related to the cultural instruction via English picture books. |
