New Immigrant Mothers’ Participation in the Parenting Education Activities Abstract The government and private institutions of new immigrants in recent years actively planed and promoted parenting education for new immigrants. However, the new immigrants participation rate, and forms of activities, participation experiences need to be further studied. The researcher used the interview questionnaire to explore the new immigrant mothers’ participation in the parenting activities, their motivation and experiences. A total of 38 new immigrant mothers were interviewed. The major results were as follows: First, the new immigrant mothers’ motivation of participating in the parenting education activities included: the needs of parenting educational, interests of activities, to know more hometown friends. Second, the main reasons of not participating activities were the need to go to work, no childcare, no interest, and traffic inconvenience. Third, the new immigrant mothers’ positive feelings of participation included parenting education activities providing learning experiences, providing useful information to other immigrant mothers; and interactive group participation experiences with Taiwan parents. Fourth, the new immigrant mothers’ negative feelings included those who felt bored of criticism of others, feeling uncomfortable, and useless. The one time and family-based parenting education programs were less popular and attractive to the new immigrant mothers. Fifth, most of the new immigrant mothers felt supportive from their spouse, other family members were not the major support resource. Beside the spouse, there were only a few family members showed support to the immigrant mothers. Sixth, through participation in parenting education, new immigrant mothers’ had positive change in personal feelings, to learn the appropriate way of parenting education, improving family relations, enhancing their awareness of the role of fatherhood of their spouses, promoting parents and teachers’ cooperation.
