The Research on the Influences of the Information Integrated into Earthquake Disaster Prevention Education on Elementary Schoolchildren's Learning Motivation and Learning Effects

Up to the present, the earthquake disaster prevention education in elementary schools is mainly through traditional lecturing and dictation in class. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to identify the influences of information integrated into earthquake disaster prevention education instruction courses on students’ learning motivation and learning effects and investigates elementary schoolchildren’s opinions and preferences for the teaching materials and the worksheets. Quasi-experimental research method was adopted in this study. The participants were composed of 73 third graders from two randomly-chosen classes in an elementary school. One class was assigned to be the experiment group, where the information integrated earthquake disaster prevention education instruction courses were conducted. The other one served as the control group, where the conventional instruction courses were carried on. The experiment lasted for ten classes in five weeks. The assessment tools are the tests for measuring subjects’ learning motivation and learning effect. Two groups of students took both the pre-test and the post-test, filled out the questionnaire which investigated their general feeling about the teaching materials and completed worksheets. The results were analyzed by independent-samples t test and paired-samples t test after experimental instruction. The results of the research are described as follows. 1. The experimental group has significantly higher learning motivation than the control group after instruction courses. 2. The experimental group has achieved significantly better learning effects than the control group after instruction courses. 3. Both groups of students hold a positive and favorable attitude toward the teaching materials. 4. The experimental group’s preference for most of the worksheets is significantly higher than the control group .
