A Study on the Relationship among Personality Trait, Life Stress and Physical and Mental Health of the ElementarySchool Homeroom Teachers in Kaohsiung City

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among personality trait, life stress and physical and mental health of the elementary school homeroom teachers in Kaohsiung City. The subjects were 390 homeroom teachers of public elementary schools in Kaohsiung city. A questionnaire survey was applied by statistical methods in this study. The results of this study were as follows: 1.The elementary school homeroom teachers’ personality traits were mostly positive. 2.The elementary school homeroom teachers'' feelings of life stresses were acceptable, and their physical and mental health conditions were good. 3.Comparing with the male elementary school homeroom teachers, the female teachers tended to be more neurotic, were easier to feel stressed, and had worse physical and mental health condition. 4.The elder elementary school homeroom teachers were, the greater conscientiousness characteristic and the better life adaptation and health quality they had. 5.The elementary school homeroom teachers who served in the small-scale schools in Kaohsiung City had higher extroverted traits. 6.The elementary school homeroom teachers who served in the large-scale schools in Kaohsiung City had higher feelings of life stress. 7.The elementary school homeroom teachers who served in the medium-scale schools in Kaohsiung City had better life adaptation and health quality. 8.The elementary school homeroom teachers who had administrative responsibilities had higher degrees of neuroticism, more physical ill symptoms and higher depressive tendencies. 9.There were significant relationships among personality trait, life stress, and physical and mental health. 10.The elementary school homeroom teachers’ personality traits and life stresses could predict the tendency of physical and mental health the most and among which “neuroticism” and “life stress” were the two most predictive variables. Finally, theoretical and practical implications of the results were discussed and future research directions were proposed.
