An Action Research of Enhancing Career Maturity by Career Development Curriculum for the Sixth Grade Students.

Career development plays an important role in people’s life course. Grade 1-9 curriculum set “career development and life long learning” as one of the “ten basic abilities,” which demonstrates the importance of career development education. By means of design and implementation of career development curriculum, this research aims to promote school children’s self-realization, career realization, career exploration and the ability to choose career path in order to assist school children to succeed in the mission of career development and enhance their career maturity. This research takes the form of action research. Researcher conducts observation on problems encountered in teaching field, creates action plans, implement plans through actual actions and carries out the research through the process of planning, action, reflection and correction. In the process of research, the data of learning process of school children is collected continuously by using “Career Maturity Inventory,” observation, interview, document analysis, and so on to follow school children’s changes in career maturity. In this process, researcher constructs contexts for developing introspection and reflection for career development curriculum and reference for correction based on continuous dialogue between teachers and students or teachers and their peers. The conclusions of the study were as follows: 1. Empower teachers with knowledge and ability on career development and adjust with flexibility the implementation of career development curriculum in the hope of solving the problems encountered in the process. (1) Due to the lack of discussion skills, students take up teaching time or delay teaching planned but the situation gets improved when sufficiently and appropriately guided and examples are showed. (2) Questions asked from students are more or different from what researcher had expected and are clarified and corrected through professional dialogues with peers. (3) Worksheets in class give rise to too much learning pressure and the situations get improved through the adjustment in number of worksheets or replacing the worksheets with activities. (4) It’s not easy to cultivate good habits and attitudes. It is fostered and reinforced by extending activity time and by teaching in accordance with individual difference. 2. Career development curriculum of this research aims to enhance career maturity for the sixth grade Students. (1) Multiple teaching methods and styles are applied to career development curriculum in order to stimulate creative thinking in students and increase their self-realization. (2) Career development curriculum provide students with the opportunity for team work, which enables them to adapt to the changes in society and enhance career realization. (3) Incorporating with relative field knowledge, career development curriculum enhances career exploration and the ability in choosing career path in accordance with students’ needs. 3. The implementation of action research on career development curriculum is beneficial to teachers’ professional reflection and growth. (1) The implementation of career development education is not achieved. Teachers’ teaching ability can be enhanced by broadening professional knowledge and by conducting action research. (2) In accordance with goals of career development education and consideration of students’ needs and interests, curriculum design should be more comprehensive and adaptive. (3) A corporation pattern should be built for teachers, peers and parents in order to enhance teachers’ teaching performance and students’s career performance. (4) Introspection, reflection and correction in the process of teaching and research are applied to enhancing teachers’ career development ability and enhance teachers’ professional growth. (5) Diversified and substantial career development curriculum will accompany teachers and students for growth and mutual learning. Finally, according to the conclusion of the study, the researcher proposed some suggestion to the implementation of career development education, teachers’ implementation of career development curriculum and future research.
