English Language Learning Discussions of Children from Different Social-Class

English language learning in Taiwan is quite common and increasingly prevalent. This study takes sociology of education and children''s subjectivity to explore English language learning of elementary school children from different social-class families. This study also focuses on the operation of children''s subjectivity is active or passive and to analyze the children''s English learning types. The qualitative research is adopted to discuss the cases that have had the experience of learning English in the formal school curriculum. There are six elementary school children from different social class participating in this research. And then through the in-depth interview, to look for from the following: children''s interpretation of English language learning, children''s English language learning strategies, and children''s subjectivity. The major findings of this study are summarized as following: 1. Children from different social-class have different cognition, interpretation, and attitude in English language learning. Because of family culture capital, the cognition and interpretation of children from middle-class family are more specific than from working-class family. But English language learning attitude is not affected by different social-class, primarily in accordance with the performance of individual children. 2. Children from different social-class take different English language learning methods and strategies. Children from middle-class family perform more methods and strategies. 3. There is no obvious correlation between the performance of children''s subjectivity and different social-class. Finally, recommendations are made based on the findings of the research. Suggestions for further research are also proposed.
