An Action Research of Alphabet Remedial Instruction on Fourth Grade Students in an Elementary School

Popis: | 99 This study basically was an action on the beginning level of English learning. Four fourth graders with English underachievement in an elementary school were recruited to receive an alphabet remedial instruction. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the remedial instruction on these students’ alphabet recognizing, articulating and writing performances. It was also to develop an alphabet remedial instruction program appropriate for English beginners by constantly adjusting the program based on the students’ responses. During this research, the data collected from classroom observation, interviews, reflective journals, and students’ documents were analyzed. The major findings are summarized as follows: 1. The remedial instruction program could help beginners learn Englishalphabet. 2. The remedial instruction program was significantly effective in improving the students’ alphabet learning abilities with the intervention of various teaching approaches, adequate practice, and real-life learning materials. 3. The student performances of alphabet recognizing, articulating and writing were significantly improved from the instruction. Based on the results, the suggestions for beginning-level English teaching and further research in this domain were given. |
