The study was to investigate the misconception of decimal and the reasons that the fifth grade students have, and to compare the similarity and difference between our findings with past studies. The subjects were forty-four 5th grade students in an elementary school of Pingtung County. This study used the decimal questionnaires that created by Meng-Ju Kuo (2002) for understanding students learning performance. The students with consistent misconception according to the questionnaires were further interviewed to explore the reasons of misconception forming. The data was further analyzed to investigate the influence of the teaching methods of the teachers on the development of decimal conception. This study found the misconceptions of the students have included conversion between fraction and decimal, conversion between the single number and compound number, the decimal comparison, the decimal addition/subtraction, and the decimal computation. The main resource of misconception were from sstudents’ informal and formal school learning experiences, daily language using, and over generalization when they solved decimal problems.
