The main purpose of this research is to discuss the effects on the 5th graders’ reading comprehension ability caused by the instruction of summary strategy. The subjects are 5th grade students which come from two classes in New Taipei City. The two classes were divided into two groups, control group and experimental group, and tested by self-made evaluation tools based on PIRLS 2006. The different instructions, summary strategy instruction for experimental group and free reading for control group, were carried out for 9 weeks after the pretest and the posttest was executed in the end of instruction. After the duration, we selected pretest scales to be covariation to analyze the results with ANCOVA (analysis of covariance) to weed out the impacts that did not random sampling and to find out a) the reading comprehension performance of subjects, b) the impact to the reading comprehension ability after the implementation of summary strategy instruction, and c) the help of the strategy to the subjects with different comprehension ability. The results are as followed: 1 On the 5th graders’ current performance of reading comprehension ability: “retrieve explicitly stated information” works best but “examine and evaluate content, language and textual elements” works worst. “straightforward process” is better than “interpreting process”. 2 On the impact to reading comprehension ability caused by the instruction of summary strategy: It offers positive impacts in all aspects. It upgrades the performances of “straightforward understanding” and “interpreting understanding” and helps a lot to the overall reading comprehension ability as well. 3 On the different performances of the targets in different levels: “instruction of summary strategy” helps more to the advanced students as well as their reading comprehension ability. On the other hand, it helps less to the beginners as well as their reading comprehension ability. In recent years, all the countries around the world advocate various educational reforms to upgrade their competitive power. Among all these reforms, civil reading activity is the core. In Taiwan, we regard reading education as an important indicator to life –time study and educational competitive power. We really expect this research to benefit all the elementary school teachers in reading education teaching and develop the appropriate reading education methodology and strategies for 5th graders to enhance their reading comprehension ability.
