Mental retardation medical research in anti-social exclusion strategy - in the Case of the Dental Service in YuJen Child Development Center

Popis: | 99 Based on social exclusion theory, by observing the “special medical services pilot project” which was hold in YuJen Child Development Center, this paper explored the difficulties of the mental retardation. For the mental retardation, it is hard to go to see a doctor by himself/herself. The purpose of the research was to investigate the strategies of avoiding the social exclusion of seeking health care for mental retardation. This study used in-depth interview to collect data. There are totally 271 patients using this service (129 men and 82 women). There are 99 moderately mentally retarded patients, 50 severely mental retarded patients, 38 mild mental retarded patients, and 24 patients with extremely severely Mental Retardation. There are 66 patients live in the Wanhua District (about 31%). There are 16 patients had been using this service for five years (2006~2010). These patients changed their minds and their health from exclusion to acceptance, nutritional imbalance to balance. This project has improved oral health of the mental retardation and combined different fields. And more and more Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) are willing to join this kind of projects. Since 2005, YuJen Child Development Center and the Taipei Association of Dentists have tried to push the oral health services for mental retardation and to promote participation of the public, strengthen social networks. They want to help mental the retardation mentally return to the mainstream society. This research suggests the Government should expand public awareness, provide incentives, and establish a classification system to benefit more people with physical and mental disabilities. |
