The Relations among Social Support, Academic Stress, and Academic Achievement of Senior High School Students

The first purpose of this study was to explore gender difference in social support(parent, teacher, classmate, and close friend), academic stress(expectations of parents, teachers, and self) and academic achievement of senior high school students. The second purpose of this study was to examine the relations among social support, academic stress and academic achievement. The third purpose of this study was to examine how the social support and academic stress predicted academic achievement. There were four hundred fifty-three twelfth-grade students from six senior high schools in Changhua. Materials used included: (1) The Child and Adolescence Social Support Scale(CASSS); (2) Academic Expectations Stress Inventory(AESI); (3) General Scholastic Ability Test. The reliability and validity for the instruments of CASSS and AESI were checked and were satisfactory. The research results were summarized as follows: 1. Female had higher classmate support and close friend support, and male had higher academic achievement. 2. Social support and academic stress were positively associated, academic stress and academic achievement were positively associated, but social support and academic achievement were partly positively associated. 3. Hierarchical regression analysis indicated that parent support, teacher support, and academic stress of self exception positively predicted academic achievement. Close friend support negatively predicted academic achievement.
