The rapid development of smart phones and the popularity of mobile Internet enhance the willingness of using mobile commerce, including mobile entertainment, online transactions, digital publications reading-on-the-road, and so on. Among them, electronic book (e-Book) leads to a new way of reading and enables the reading by mobile devices anytime and anywhere. However, to protect the interests of publishers and authors, current retailing prices of e-books are often expensive. Additionally, e-books cannot be transferred or rented so that the flexibility is reduced in comparison to paper books. In this thesis, it extend existing rental model for paper books and propose a rental protocol, based on P2P sharing in a B2C e-book platform, for secure and flexible rentals of e-books. In the proposed protocol, readers may rent an e-Book but both the publisher and the authors lose no benefits. Thus, the flow and sharing of the E-Book are increased but the issuing of the e-book is effectively controlled. In addition, a B2C e-book platform is devised to allow users to access e-books and related information more flexibly. The platform eases the searching and rental of e-books, and facilitates the exchanging of readers’ notes, experience sharing, or reviews. In order to effectively control the circulation of the e-book and the security of transmission, the study use digital rights management technology to separate the ownership and readership of an e-book. The right object (RO) of an e-book delineates permissions of the rental by the owner. The mechanism protects not only the owner and the renter in a rental but also the author’s profit from illegal e-book transferring or copying. In addition, the RO and an encryption key altogether protect the content from illegal readable replications.
