Chinese Medical Gynecologists' Attitude towards Traditional Chinese Postpartum Care 'Zuo Yuezi' in Taiwan

The phenomenon of Taiwan “Zuo Yuezi” has exceptional features, such as Chinese Medicinal system background, and recent commercialization. Despite of its millennia-lasting history, an impact of “Zuo Yuezi” on human life and reproduction is still unknown. This research purpose was to describe the Taiwan Chinese medical Gynecologists’ attitude towards “Zuo Yuezi” tradition, and to describe contemporary “Zuo Yuezi” through their practical knowledge and experience. The questionnaire used as tool in this survey consists of three parts: first one comprised of demographic information regarding Respondents, second one was composed of 21 questions testing respondents practical knowledge on “Zuo Yuezi” ; third part included information about respondents attitude to 69 elements of “Zuo Yuezi” and its assignment to 4 different categories of consideration. Research subject was a group of 54 Chinese medical doctors who practiced in Chinese Medicine Department of Teaching Hospitals, and were recognized by the Committee on Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy, Department of Health, Executive Yuan. In this group, 39 (72%) gynecologists returned the questionnaire. Results showed that: 1) younger, female practitioners prevail in this group. 2) All respondents were involved in “Zuo Yuezi” clinical practice. 3) “Zuo Yuezi” is considered as very important and contributing to postpartum mother’s health. 4) Transition in “Zuo Yuezi” manner includes: resignation from the traditional restrictions concerning hygiene, like washing body and hair, preference for commercial location and service of “Zuo Yuezi centers” for postpartum rest, shifting of family members way of participation in “Zuo Yuezi”. 5) Impact of western medical education on Respondent’s attitude is visible.
