Handgrip is one the major functions of hand. Measurements of grip force allow assessment of functional capability of the hand. The Borg’s CR-10 rating scale is a tool to collect subjective muscular exertion and physical workload. Theoretically, this scale should have a linear relationship with hand force when measuring grip force. This research investigated the effects of CR-10 rating, gender, hand used, and elbow posture on grip force for middle school students. The results showed that all these factors significantly affect grip force. Dominant hands have higher grip force than non-dominant hands for both males and females. Regression analysis was also conducted to establish linear regression model to predict the estimated rating scale when applying a 10 kgf force. The results showed the estimated rating scores were lower than the actual scores. The reported ratings were 3 (medium) and 5 (heavy) for males and females, respectively. The result showed that males and females had different perceptions on the load when applying a same force. Compare the subjective perception of 10kgf between our subjects and the adults in the literature, youngsters reported different ratings compared to those of the adults. The results implied that the Borg CR-10 scale should be revised considering the effects of age and gender.
