Nafion/polysulfone nanofiber composite membranes - Preparation and applications to DMFC

In this study we prepare polysulfone(PSU) fiber thin films by electro-spinining from PSU/DMAc (N,N’-dimethyl acetamide) solution. The nano-fiber thin film was them impregnated in Nafion solution to prepare Nafion/PSU composite membrane. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the morphology of Nafion/PSU-nano-fiber composite membrane, which showed the micro-poros of electro-spun PSU nano-film were filled with Nafion resin and no voids were observed in the composite membranes. The composite membrane has a proton conductivity σ=1.46X10-2 and a methanol permeability P=1.99X10-6, which were lower than those of Nafion-117 (σ=1.92X10-2 S/cm ;P=3.31X10-6 cm2/sec), This finished membrane was also assembled as electrode for direct-methanol fuel cells (DFMC) testing. The results show the Nafion/PSU membrane has a maximaum power dansity at 80℃ with a 2M methanol feed solution.
