The Stress and Needs of Caregivers of Children Dependent on Oxygen Therapy. In the recent few years, there has been an increase in the prevalence of the survival of children chronically depending on oxygen therapy. To these childrens’primary caregivers, the burden of care of the children at home can be overwhelming, and yet there is little research examining the stress and needs of the families.. In Taiwan, long-term respiratory care resources are not well developed, and the health care system does not offer pediatric home respiratory care. The cross-sectional descriptive study aimed at examining the stress and needs of primary caregivers with children who were dependent on oxygen therapy. The study attempted to determine which factors contribute to the burden of the caregivers via structural questionnaires. The questionnaires were : "Demographic details of the subjects", “ The Characteristics of the Oxygen-dependent Child", "Perceived Family Stress Scale", "Family Needs Assessment", and "Social Support Assessment". There were 104 caregivers of an at-home oxygen-dependent child in the sample recruited from either a pediatric otolaryngologic outpatient clinic of a tertiary medical center in Taipei, Taiwan or "The Association of Let- Children-Breathing Happily". Data was analyzed by SPSS Windows ver. 13.0 such as descriptive statistical analysis, t-test, One-Way ANOVA, and Pearson's product moment correlation. The results show that the variable of "Disruption of family function" was the main source of stress for the caregivers with an at-home oxygen-dependent child, while the variable of "The caregiver’s needs" contributed the least to the stress. With respect to the needs of the subjects, support for the "physiological needs" was most needed, while needs for the “social support” was least requested. In terms of social support experienced by the subjects, "emotional support" was seen as most helpful, while medical support in terms of "informational support" was regarded helpful. Overall, perceived stress and need for social support by the caregivers of an oxygen - dependent child at home were directly correlated with the person's age, marital status, and self-perceived health. There were association between the perceived stress of the primary caregiver and age and self-perceived health status. The findings of the study should be considered in the clinical nursing practices, formation of social policy, and nursing education and research to improve the care of the families of an oxygen- dependent child at home.
