Research on Promoting Foreign Elementary Students' Mandarin Learning Motivation and Learning Effectiveness-A Case Study

The aim of this study was to explore how the teacher of the Chinese Language Program motivates her foreign student’s learning, and the effectiveness of her teaching strategies to the student’s Mandarin learning. The study purpose was to provide useful reference to teachers who teach Mandarin to foreign children. This study adopted a qualitative approach. The research data were collected through classroom observations, interviews and data analysis according to the research objectives. The research objects included one student and one teacher from the Chinese Language Program of a Taipei City elementary school. The findings of the study were as follows: Firstly, the Chinese Language Program teacher’s strategies to motivate her student included: 1.To help the student set learning goals and trigger his/her learning motivation by finding his/her favorable learning conditions based on his/her benefits and interests; 2.To cultivate peer group cooperative learning atmosphere by providing a friendly learning environment with acceptance, respect and encouragement; 3.To provide of create student successful experience by making good use of reward measurement and praises. Secondly, the Chinese Language Program teacher’s teaching strategies to motivate learning were: 1.To provide large amount of Mandarin as stimulation to learning; 2.To reinforce student’s Mandarin proficiency by spiral teaching strategies; 3.To adopt multiple teaching and assessment methods, and plan individual education program; 4.To promote the student’s Mandarin learning by using bi-lingual education, supplementary materials, flexible adaptive assessments and elastic and genuine Mandarin contexts. Thirdly, the student’s learning motivation and learning effectiveness were analyzed as follows: 1.The case student’s Mandarin academic performance progresses gradually. He has a sense of identity on his home room class. He also loves school life and the Mandarin class. 2.The students’ lively, outgoing personality facilitates his learning goals. 3.The effectiveness of applying Mandarin knowledge to daily life situations facilitates the student’s learning motivation. Based on the findings of this study, some suggestions to the educational authorities, school and relative teachers are provided.
