The Effect of Creative Science Games Conducted into Nature and Science Technology Curriculum in Elementary School

This research aims to study the effects on the creativity, problem-solving ability and academic performance of elementary school students when self-devised creative science games are conducted into curriculum of Nature and Science Technology. This research adopts Quasi Experiment Method on the fifth graders of Taipei Municipal Hu Shan Elementary School as they were taught in different groups. The Experimental Group were taught with the creative science games whereas the teacher of the Control Group followed the instructions of the text books and teacher’s manual. Before and after the experiment, students are evaluated with Reorganization Problem Solving Test and Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. After the experiment, assessment on student’s academic performances and survey of learning satisfaction were implemented. After the quantitative data were analyzed with SPSS and related tools, researcher’s findings are as followed: 1. In regard to the test for problem solving ability, students of the Experimental Group performed better than those of the Control Group in finding the cause of problems, avoiding problems and the effectiveness of the tests. 2. In regard to the tests for creative thinking abilities, students of the Experimental Group performed better in flexibility than those of the Control Group. 3. There were no significant differences in academic performance between the two groups. However, students of the Experimental Group scored 4.15 points higher in total average than those of the Control Group. In addition, three students who got a full score were from the Experimental Group. 4. According to the result of the questionnaire of satisfaction for this experiment, students of the Experimental Group and teachers who had conducted creative science games into their teaching showed positive attitude towards the learning effectiveness of conducting creative science games into the curriculum. In conclusion, related suggestions based on the findings were provided for teachers in practice and future researches in this area.
