The red-faced lion troupe of Lion God Club is a local folklore of Liuchia Hsiang, which is also an active troupe often seen on local temple festivals. It is also a necessary vanguard during the temple tour activity that not only has the lion dance performance, but also presents the martial art parade similar to Sung-Chiang Parade, which has the function of exorcism and ridden of evil and protection of people and defense of the local security. Those are the factors that motivated the research with the following purpose: (1) To investigate the history and origin of the lion troupe; (2) To investigate the history and origin of the red-faced lion troupe of Lion God Club of Liuchia Hsiang; (3) To investigate the organization and operation of the red-faced lion troupe of Lion God Club of Liuchia Hsiang; (4) To analyze the meaning and function of the techniques of the red-faced lion troupe of Lion God Club of Liuchia Hsiang. This research has applies historical research method which is mainly based on field study and document analysis methods to come up with the following discussion: 1. The development condition of the Chinese lion dance: The official record of Chinese lion dance was traced back to Wei and Jin Dynasties, which has been deep into the general public during the Song Dynasty. The lion dance has been closely connected with folklore activity of the New Year festivals ever since Ming Dynasty. Moreover, the lion dance has combined with the martial art after Ching Dynasty to become a popular civil sports activity that shows the national specialty and characteristics. 2. The fighting for water and land have often happened in Taiwan during Ching dynasty especially at the land reclamation period, sometimes it even caused iii gang fighting. In order to defend the local security, people organized different troupes such as: Sung-Chiang Parade or Lion Troupe for the purpose of self defense. 3. According to the retold stories of the seniors and the document records, the red-faced lion troupe of Lion God Club was a troupe organization of martial art defense function. It was said it probably has borne the local defense duty ever since the end of Ming Dynasty and beginning of Ching Dynasty and has more than three hundred years of history up to now. 4. From the features of the weapons (Chia-Shih) and costumes as well as the troupe formation, one may see it has fully reflected the living style, religious blessing and local culture characteristics of our ancient agricultural society. Along with the evolution of time, it has the function to protect people and safeguard the home town, to get rid of the evil spirits and guarantee the safety of the land, to give people peace of mind, to bring the unification, to strengthen up the body, to join the force of the local people, to pass on the culture specialty, etc.
