| Popis: | 98 The purposes of this study were to investigate the correlations between reading comprehension and mathematics word problems of reading and problem solving, and the differences of the learners with different capabilities of reading comprehension on solving mathematics word problems. The participants in this study were selected by stratified random cluster sampling process. The participants were 402 fourth-grade (the 97th school year) students (15 classes) from 15 elementary schools in Miaoli, Taizhong, Nantou, Changhua Counties and Taichung City. Quantitative analyses were used. The findings from the research results were as follows: 1. There was a significant relationship between students’ reading comprehension and mathematics word problems of reading comprehension. The students with better Chinese reading comprehension might have better understanding on mathematics word problems. 2. There were significant differences among different capabilities of reading comprehension for the students’ understanding on mathematics word problems. The high-performed group did better than both the middle- performed and the low-performed groups. The middle- performed group did better than the low-performed one. 3. There was a significant relationship between reading comprehension and solving mathematics word problems. The students with better Chinese reading comprehension might did better on solving mathematics word problems. 4. There were significant differences among different capabilities of reading comprehension for the students’ solving mathematics word problems. The high-performed group did better than both the middle- performed and the low-performed groups. The middle- performed group did better than the low-performed one. 5. There was a significant relationship between understanding on mathematics word problems and solving mathematics word problems. The students with better understanding on mathematics word problems might did better on solving mathematics word problems. |
