The research purpose of the study is to realize the health condition of the old trees in Tzuoying District of Kaohsiung City. From July to August in 2009, the researcher implemented a series of examinations on current existing condition, basic data and measurements of health-related variables of those trees and then set up a monitoring framework of health in this area that provides the management reference for administrators. While doing the survey on the basic data of old trees, the researcher checked the location of each old tree and tried to match the findings with information obtained in 2003; the researcher found that the amount of old trees declined from 82 to 70 and the number of species was decreased from 9 to 8. The fewer ones were classified by man-made observation and then applied discriminate analysis on the differentiation of the health condition of both the Bischofia javanica Blume and the Samanea saman Merrill. As regards Bischofia javanica Blume, the hit rate of discriminate function on the differentiation of health condition is 96.2%. The variables that have the better explanatory power are crown transparency, crown dieback and the hazard level of stranglers. As regards Samanea saman Merrill, the hit rate of discriminate function on the differentiation of health condition is as high as 97.1%. The variables that have better discriminating abilities are crown transparency, worms bite on tree leaves and tree leaves’ falling. By and large, the amount of old trees in Tzuoying District, subjects of this study, is 35, which is 50% of the total amount. 23 of those old trees are facing potential hazards, which is 33% of the total amount. The amount of old trees that are in danger is 12, 17% of the total amount.
