The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of Science Achievement, Metacognitive authentic, and metacognitive abilities on 8th graders by using「IMPROVE metacognitive instruction」. We also inquired the differences on the students with different learning achievement before and after this kind of instruction. The design of this study was a quasi-experiment design involving two eight-grade classes. One class was the experiment group, and the other class was the control group. The time lasted twelve classes. The data were analyzed by t-test,and ANCOVA. The findings were as follows:(1) no significant difference was found on students’ science achievement tests between the experiment group and the control group. It showed that there is no obvious influence on students, learning achievement by using metacognition to teach. (2)on Metacognitive authentic test, we found that the experiment group had a higher metacognitive ability than the control group.(3)on metacognitive questionnaire, we found that the score of the experiment group was higher than the control group. It showed that students can promote their metacognitive ability by using IMPROVE metacognitive instruction. (4)on metacognitive pre-post test of reflection aspect with different learning achievement, high and medium level students were significant on their metacognitive ability, but low level students were not. On the other aspects, all level students were significant on Metacognitive pre-post test. It showed that training students through IMPROVE metacognitive instruction has benefits to improving their metacognitive ability. Based on the research, the following suggestion was given that metacognitive ability can be raised by training. As long as teachers add metacognition strategy in the classroom or in the problem-solving process, students’ problem-solving skills can be promoted as well.
