The curriculum program, called “Family Picture-alternative family types,” is composed of “family image,” “family types,” “family interaction,” and “family surroundings.” The program was carried out for twenty-five lessons long during ten weeks. Data mainly come from classroom observation records, interviews, and the document analysis in questionnaires, reflection notes, works of students, and learning feedbacks. The following four conclusions are derived: 1. Students’ awareness of alternative family types were determined by their actual experience, and most of them had nuclear family concept. Besides, students from alternative families lacked identification and confidence toward their own family type. 2. In curriculum design and teaching process, planning and execution of this curriculum included philosophy formation, goal setting, material selection, multiple teaching methods, teaching assessment and teaching design modification. In addition, it emphasized on the cycle of action, observation, reflection, modification, and reaction. 3. In the execution and effect, the concept of alternative family types delivered by the program is feasible. Use of empathy, positive examples, and incorporation of real situations are all helpful to students’ learning the concept of alternative family types. Besides the recognition of alternative family types, students still expect “Perfect” family like the nuclear family. 4. In teacher’s professional growth and reflection, action research can increase the professional growth of the teacher, and help the researcher re-orientate the teacher’s role. Finally, suggestions on the teaching, for the school and future research issues are provided based on the research findings and conclusions. |
