Thus, a house with universal design which is “design for all” can provide the comfortable, safe and healthy living quarter for elderly adults. The purposes of this study are: to elucidate the interior space usage, residential demands, and acceptance for the house with universal design and the housing expectancy for elderly adults in Taiwan. A questionnaire titled “The universal design in the housing space” was used to collect relevant information. The content of the questionnaire contains four sections: basic information and independent living states, the concept of the universal design for housing, the residential demands and acceptance for the house with universal design, and the housing expectancy. 205 valid questionnaires were enrolled (response rate 91%) with the percentages of 45 for men and 55 for women, respectively. About 70 percent of all subjects were 60 to 75 years old, 76~ 84 and above 85 years old were about 25 and 5 percent, separately. Moreover, about 53% of all subjects were retired. For elderly, the substantial residential demands include「no barrier and no-step entry to the living room」,「non-slip floors in the bathroom and a separable shower space」 and 「the suitable windows setting for good ventilation」. Moreover, men emphasize that main living space should be set in the first floor, and women address that facilities and equipments of daily living should easy use and control. Furthermore, 68 percent of all subjects are willing to purchase and own the house with universal design. The contributions of this study can provide the useful information to the building design and create the comfortable interior space to all family. |
