The Study on Requirements of a Home Environment for Ageing in Place

As the elderly population rose drastically, Taiwan has entered the aging society since 1993. The residential patterns and living willing of the older people mainly go towards aging in place. Therefore, the living environment and architectural design become an important issue to be studied. However, the current residential architecture and space planning base on the needs of healthy adults and rarely consider the actual needs of the older person. The older people can not live their home as comfortable and safe as before. Due to on this reason, the purpose of the study is to analyze the obstacles and difficulties and to find the requirements of residential environment for the older people. We design the questionnaire using two dimensional Kano model to investigate the opinion of older persons aged over 65 living in the house. The software, SPSS12.0 Windows version, is used as a data analysis tool. The results show the older people living with their spouses or children are quite common and the fall rate is 28%. The places they often fall are bathroom and stairs. The most living difficulties for them are bathrooms without security handrails and the bedroom is not located in first floor. These difficulties are significantly different with the level of self-perceived health. According to two dimensional Kano analysis, residential quality attributes include the main door of the ramp to facilitate wheelchair access, bedroom bathroom facilities adjacent to the bedroom, bathroom installation of handrails to facilitate movement of the body etc. are the 18 charming items. Based on the indicators of quality improvement, the quality elements the older people care much are in the first quadrant of the demand matrix elements, including 10 items. This study has provided the residential hindrances and requirements for architecture industry to build more comfortable houses to meet the needs of older people with the physical disabled.
