A Study on Music Student Teachers'Educational Practice of the New Enactment of Teacher Education Law

The purpose of this study was to investigate music student teachers’ attitudes toward, and job satisfaction and job problems of educational practice of the New Enactment of Teacher Education Law. Subjects of this study are student teachers who graduated from nine music-related departments of colleges/ universities in the year of 2007 and 2008. “Questionnaire of music student teachers’ educational practice of the New Enactment of Teacher Education Law” was designed for the study. The collected data was analyzed by descriptive statistic, t-test and one-way ANOVA. The findings of this research are as follows: I. Music student teachers show negative attitudes toward educational practice of the New Enactment of Teacher Education Law. II. The music student teachers’job satisfaction with educational practice 1. The result shows the degree of overall job satisfaction with educational practice is “moderate”. The category “teaching practice in general subjects” gains the highest rating, while “workshop activities” gaining the lowest rating. 2. The variable of school scale makes significant differences to overall job satisfaction and the category of “workshop activities”. Variables including musical instrument, school scale and school location make significant differences in the category of “administration practice”. 3. To those music student teachers who taught the music course of Arts and Humanities, the degree of job satisfaction with “teaching practice in music instruction” tends to be “satisfied”. 4. To those music student teachers who assisted to instruct the school music ensembles, the degree of job satisfaction with “music ensemble instruction” tends to be “satisfied”. Meanwhile, both of musical instrument and school scale variables make significant differences in this category. III. The music student teacher’s job problems of educational practice 1. Over fifty percent of music student teachers felt puzzled to “deal with variance of student”, “apply teaching theory to the practice” and “handle the unexpected case” in the general practice. 2. Over sixty percent of music student teachers felt puzzled to deal with “the trouble students who frequently made errors and were not intent on correcting their behaviors”. 3. About thirty percent of music student teachers felt puzzled due to “lack of administration experience”, “administration job which doesn’t relate to personal background knowledge” and “too many administration jobs” in the category of “administration practice”. 4. Forty percent of music student teachers didn’t feel puzzled about “workshop activities”. 5. Nearly seventy percent of music student teachers felt puzzled about “job loss in the elementary school” in the category of “career adaptability and development”. 6. There are sixty percent of music student teachers who taught music course of Arts and Humanities felt puzzled to “manage student interest and competence”, and fifty percent felt puzzled about “conducting assessments according to variance of student”. 7. Nearly forty percent of music student teachers who instructed the school music ensembles felt puzzled to “set up timetable and schedule of practicing”. Based on the conclusions of the study, suggestions are proposed to related education authorities, intern schools, music student teachers, and future studies as well.
