A STUDY IN STORYTELLING WITH VISUAL AIDS AND ITS EFFECT ON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS'ENGLISH LISTENING COMPREHENSION

The purpose of this study is to investigate storytelling with visual aids and its effect on elementary school student’s English listening comprehension. Explicitly, the student responds to the four listening selections, storytelling with visual aids, taking the pretest and the post-test and the student’s English story listening comprehension are explored. The subjects in this study were 32 third-grade students of Kaohsiung Municipal Garn-He Elementary School. The study was conducted for ten weeks and all these subjects were requested to listen to the four listening selections: (a) Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear, (b) The Very Hungry Caterpillar, (c) There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, and (d) Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type. After listening to each listening selection, they were asked to take the pretests and the post-tests. In data collection, the student responds to the four listening selections, comments on storytelling with visual aids, the researcher reflection notes and the student interview records were analyzed qualitatively. Besides, the statistic data was analyzed quantitatively including (a) the students’ English story listening comprehension pretests and post-tests, (b) the student responds to listening selections, storytelling with visual aids and listening comprehension tests. According to the data analysis, the results of the present study are summarized as follows: 1. The majority of the students displayed positive attitudes to the four listening selections. 2. The majority of the students showed positive responses to the English storytelling with visual aids. 3. The most part of the students positively responded to taking the pretests and the post-tests for this English storytelling with visual aids program. 4. The findings of the English storytelling with visual aids were significantly effective in promoting the students’ English story listening comprehension. 5. Most students present their positive attitudes to the effect of visual aids in facilitating English story listening comprehension. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher suggested that English teachers in the elementary school should integrate English storytelling into official English classes in order to develop elementary school students’ positive attitudes and willingness to learn English. In addition, English teachers can adopt listening materials with predictable and repetitive sentences to offer students a pleasure and supportive environment in storytelling and English acquisition. Finally, it is recommended that English teachers incorporate visual aids in English instruction to enhance students’ listening comprehension.
