This study probes the simplification variation between the translations of informative and evocative webpages with the Corpus-based Translation Studies (CTS) approach. Simplification is produced when translators tend to simplify the translation during the translating process and to make the whole translation effectively communicative. In this study, simplification results from the use of shorter average sentence length, lower adjective density and higher paragraph density that help reduce the target audience’s interpretation load and enhance textual readability. This study uses nearly a 190,000-word parallel corpus of bilingual webpages, which consists of a 93,938-word parallel subcorpus of informative bilingual webpages and a 95,640-word parallel subcorpus of evocative bilingual webpages. The findings in this study reveal that the translations of informative webpages show a higher degree of simplification at the lexical, syntactic and contextual aspects than those of evocative webpages do. The inference is that a higher degree of simplification in the translations of informative webpages is attributed to the main function of clear information transmission of informative texts. Thus, the translator has to concisely present the information to help the target audience easily and clearly grasp the message. In contrast, the translations of evocative webpages show a lower degree of simplification because additional information is provided to persuade and attract the target audience’s attention. The simplification variation across text types has supported Reiss’ (1971) text typology theory that the function determines how a text should be translated. Though limited in the corpus size (189,578 words in total), the result of this study has provided significant insights into simplification variation in the webpage translations across text types. Pedagogically, a comparison of simplification variation between the translations of informative and evocative webpages enables trainee translators to understand how textual functions govern the translation strategy and how they lead to such a simplification variation.
