This thesis proposes a new protocol called “Delayed Contention DCF (DC-DCF)” for the wireless LANs, which is a modified version of DCF for better delay performance. Firstly, we model the system by a Markov Chain and derive the distribution of frame delay. Secondly, in order to maximize the channel utilization under the constraint that QoS requirement is guaranteed for DC-DCF, procedure is provided to tune the proper operation point according to the network size and QoS requirement. Thirdly, we use the model and optimal system parameters to design an admission control algorithm that can guarantee QoS and improve system efficiency. Finally, we verify our admission control algorithm by simulation and also find the inherent traffic shaping and auto scheduling features from the benefit of delayed contention.
