The Zhou Dynasty bronze inscription is an important materials of ancient character, vocabulary and grammar since it keeps in the original state and records the true language phenomena at that time. This thesis analyzes all classifiers and tries to find out the original form and meaning of each classifier in the bronze inscriptions.The materials of this study include materials of bronze inscriptions of 《殷周金文集成》and 《新收殷周青銅器銘文暨器影彙編》. The new materials printed from 《新收》to now (2009/10) are also inclueded. It also emphasizes synchronic description and diachronic compare. In this dissertation, the author choose verbs in bronze inscription of Zhou Dynasty as main research object, the meaning and the grammatical funciton of those military verbs are thoroughly studied.The work is composed of seven chapters. The first chaper outlines the value of bronze inscription, give an account of the history of studying ancient chinese language grammatical, especially ancient chinese word “ bones inscription”,”bronze inscription”, present the meaning of studying military verbs of bronze character, introduces the intention and reasons of writing this thesis as well as the writing process and research methods. The related studies are also reviewed in this chaper. The second chapter introduces the criterion,quantity and classification of military verbs of Zhou Dynasty inscription, and 123 monosyllabic verbs and 134 usage, in 660 sencente. The third、fourth and fifth chaper, the author describes the military verbs system of the bronze inscriptions. The military verbs include “inspect”,“arrange”, “aggressive”, “capture”, “rescue”, “return”, “pacify”etc. These types could be classified again depending on the significance of words. The sixth chaper reviews 123 military verbs of Zhou Dynasty inscription and gives them more synthetic demonstration according to their form, the meaning and the grammatical function.The study goes on to analyze the semantic relations between the military verb and its arguments, which are noun phrases and prepositional phrases that have certain semantic relations with the military verb. The author mainly discuss five types of argument:cause,beneficiary, time, location and agent. The final chapter is “Conclusion”. The military verbs of Zhou Dynasty in the grammar structure aspect, it take”S+V+O”as the basic sentence pattern. Besides some bronze vessels in Eastern Zhou Dynasty, the military commands are often given by the kings and feudal officials.These terminologies are often found in Western Zhou Dynasty.52 new words were created in Eastern Zhou Dynasty. With the time changing, it is less used in the Han Dynasty. This means that the military verbs of Zhou Dynasty are particular through the ages.
