This study investigates the performance differences of domestic commercial banks before and after the financial tsunami of 2008. There are 30 domestic commercial banks are examined from September, 2005 to October, 2009. The period around financial tsunami is divided into two periods. The normal period is 36 months in total and 12 quarters before September 31st, 2008. The tsunami period is 12 months and 4 quarters from October 1st, 2008 to September 31st, 2009. The data is collected from the Taiwan Economic Journal database and the empirical study analyzes the differences via t tests of the performance variances. The results show those banks in financial conglomerates have better performance than those banks which are not in financial conglomerates during normal period, such as capital adequacy ratios, Non-Performing Loans (NPL) ratios, the deposit and loan interest spread, revenue growth rates etc... Regarding the financial tsunami period, those banks in financial conglomerates have worse income growth rates than those banks which are not in financial conglomerates. Surprisingly, the results show there are no significant differences among ratios such as debt ratios, equity ratios, return on equity (ROE), and return on asset (ROA), comparing with the performance of the banks before and after the financial tsunami 2008. On the other hand, the average of the capital adequacy ratio significantly increases after the financial tsunami. The non-performance loan ratios significantly decrease during the financial crisis. Therefore, the financial tsunami 2008 doesn''t have a negative impact on it. While the spread between the deposit and loan rates significantly decreases after the crisis because the banks rely on the low-rate measures to pursue consistent growth and gain more market share. Finally, the revenue growth rates of local banks all decline dramatically after the financial tsunami because the crisis has a severely adverse impact on the economy.
