Polyethylene decomposition and liquid by-products obtainment were analysed by radio frequency vapor plasma with Argon addition. In this report, the active species in decomposition process were analyzed by photonic multichannel spectral analyzer (PMA) and the by-products of the decomposition were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass selective detector (GC/MSD). The results showed that the addition of Argon would shorten the reaction time from 61 to 41 mins. However, the reaction time would increase when the Argon flow rate increase, the distance of electrode increase or the working pressure increase. The sample would entire decomposition at pressure of 3~20 torr, but the sample was drastic ebullition during the experiment and the sample wouldn’t decompose fully after one hour at 0.3 torr. The main products were acetone and methanol. The production of acetone was found in maximum under the conditions as follows : 3 sccm Argon addition, electrode distance 2 cm and pressure 3 torr. This result proved the Argon addition can enhance the decomposition of polyethylene, and the production of recycling products had been improved by Argon addition.
