The major subject of this thesis is to investigate the performance of the multiple array antenna system under the correlated propagation environment. In recent years, the uses of multiple array antennas (referred to as Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output, MIMO) become very popular in the area of wireless communication. This is because the enhanced capabilities that MIMO array can offer in data link reliability and capacity, under the conditions of equal transmit power and channel bandwidth compared to the Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) system. Further, by choosing appropriate space-time coding schemes, the MIMO system can be arranged in functions of Spatial Diversity (MIMO-SD), Spatial Multiplexing (MIMO-SM) or mixed of both. Commonly, the MIMO-SM architecture is used to increase the data throughput and the spectral efficiency. The most popular space coding scheme for the purpose of spatial multiplexing can be the so-called BLAST (Bell Lab’s Layered Space Time Coding). Depending on the space feeding methods, there are several alternatives in BLAST: the Horizontal-BLAST (H-BLAST), the vertical-BLAST (V-BLAST) and the diagonal-BLAST (D-BLAST). The performance analyses of various BLAST architectures can be found in the variety of public literatures; however, this thesis devotes his contents to the area of effects evaluation of the MIMO-SD system under the unavoidable electromagnetic correlation phenomenon among array antenna elements. Further, the modern modulation technique of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is adopted to combine the MIMO-SD structure (MIMO-SM-OFDM) to exploit the maximum advantages of the multiple antenna system, and the Zero Forcing (ZF), Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) and Quick Response (QR) receivers are used for the overall system performance analyses. Hopefully, the results can be useful and make a contribution to the modern broadband space-time wireless communication.
