Polymeric Microneedle :Improved Design and Analysis

The aim of this study is to apply injection molding technology to produce microneedle using COC material with geometry modified from Firas Sammoura’s model. Practicality and safety of original Firas Sammoura’s model are evaluated through structural strength analysis in ANSYS Workbench 11.0. Basing on simulation result, microneedle shape has been modified in order to improve structural strength of the device. Two manufacture processes of microneedle using general injection molding and gas-assisted injection molding are assessed by utilizing analysis result from Autodesk Moldflow Insight 2010. In addition, Taguchi method is employed to investigate effect of process parameters including mold temperature, gas delay time, gas volume switchover, and gas pressure on performance of gas-assisted injection molding. The result shows that structural strength of modified model has been improved considerably comparing to original one. Meanwhile gas-assisted injection molding is superior to conventional injection molding. It is also proved that gas switch point and gas delay time impact the most on performance of gas-assisted injection molding.
