A Study on the Relationship between the Body Image and Exercise Behavior for the Students of the Janior High School in Taoyuan County

The purpose of the research was to study the status quo of junior high school students’ body image and movement behavior in Taoyuan, find out the differences shown in students from different social backgrounds, and explore the connection between students’ body image and their movement behavior. 1521 junior high school students filled in questionnaires about their body image and movement behavior. The statistical methods applied in the research are t test, One-way ANOVA and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation. The study shows the following results: 1、Among the 1521 students, boys’ appearance evaluation was higher than girls, while girls’ exterior orientation and satisfation of their body parts higher than boys. The self evaluation of their body image of the 8th graders was ovbiously higher than those of the 7th and the 9th graders; students in private schools more satisfied than those in public schools; students on school teams or in sports clubs better than non-participants; whose BMI(Body Mass Index) range from underweight or normal was even more satisfied with their body image than those who was overweight or obese; students of higher social status obviously higher than those of lower social status. 2、Students in public schools do more sports than those in private schools; students on school teams better than those who were not on teams. 3、There were a significant correlation between students’ body image and movement behavior in Taoyuan: the more satisfied students were with their body image, the better their movement behavior. Based on the above findings, the research suggests that teachers in junior high schools instill in students core value and correct concept of body image and sports; emphasize health and benefits from playing sports; design trendy and entertaining pysical education curricula, encourage the involvement of campus activities.
