Popis: | 98 The Catholic University of Peking was jointly established by the Roman Catholic Church and outstanding Chinese scholars, Xinagbo Ma and Lianzhi Ying. To found a new school in China at that time, beside the founders’ expectations and wishes, they had to consider the overall political and economic environment at that time. Going through all the vicissitudes, the university expanded and settled its foothold gradually. With the end of sino-Japanese war (1937-1945), SVD assigned an American Rector, Harold W. Rignet, to replace German Roudolf Rahmann based on the political consideration. Rigney, facing the problems such as the discrepancy between Christian dogma and central thoughts of Communism, school management, and communication with Chinese staffs, found his unique solutions. My thesis focuses on Rigney’s activities inside the school and the interactions with the Chinese society to investigate why Fu Jen Catholic University could not last in China. |
