Claude Achille Debussy (1862-1918) was an outstanding composer at the turn of the twentieth century. As a representative of impressionistic composers, Debussy is one of the most important musicians in western music history, his compositional style is very unique and is highly influential. These four piano Preludes- Danseuses de Delphes、Des pas sur la neige、La Puerta del Vino, and General Lavine-eccentric represent the mature style of Debussy. They illustrate many characters of the musical language of Debussy, and could help to understand the unique way of Debussy’s music writing. This thesis analyses four piano Preludes of Debussy and the whole article is divided into five chapters. The first chapter focuses on research motivation and method. The second chapter introduces Debussy’s life and his learning background. The third chapter discusses Debussy’s background of music writing, compositional stages and musical characteristics. The fourth chapter talks about the history of Preludes, the outlines of the four piano Preludes and analysing the styles of melody, tonality, rhythm, harmony, form, as well as the interpretation of the four Preludes- Danseuses de Delphes、Des pas sur la neige、La Puerta del Vino, and General Lavine-eccentric. The last chapter is the conclusion.
