The occurrence of change in funeral ritual in the district of Yi-Lan, did not start as early as that in the metropolitan area; however, the change has become more pronounced in the recent years with the increase of the funeral facilities and the funeral policy campaign by the government for many years. Based on the analysis of both documented literatures and in-depth interviews, experience talks from the people of funeral-related industry and viewpoints of mourning families have been included in this study to investigate the reasons of the dramatic change in funeral ritual in this decade. The author first analyzed the spiritual belief and the traditional funeral ritual, and then explored the changes of the funeral ritual in recent years. The opinions of the habitants in Yi-Lan area including the perception of both death and funeral rituals have been clarified to ascertain the current practice and, consequently, to investigate the essence and factors of the change It has been revealed that the traditional interment custom dominated in the past several centuries has been replaced gradually by the cremation. The complicated funeral rituals either skipped or simplified, has marked the changes of the civil perception, the campaign of the official policy and the modernization of society The civil concept in death is highly related to religion beliefs. People who have systematic religion beliefs are able to face death more optimistically than those who believe in folk religions. The perception of the funeral rituals depends on the age of people. Elderly people favor traditional funeral rituals while the middle-aged and the young generations consider the death ritual as an external form, of which the essence is to remember the dead and to pray for blessings. In the policy promotion, both the software and hardware of the funeral facilities set up by the government in Yi-Lan area have crucial influence on the vast change. Besides, the consciousness of the habitants over the environmental protection and the modernization prompt the Yi-Lan habitants to accept cremation over interment. To sum up, whether the funeral rituals in the future will be shifted to natural burial or to McDonaldization with the aid of technology and rationality, has suggested to be taken into account by the government authority in policy determination and facility construction.
