Many scholars recommend that teaching children to read and write stories can make a difference in students’ literacy learning. It has been found that teaching text structure explicitly to students has a positive effect on second language learners’ reading comprehension and writing ability. However, studies of reading and writing stories are mostly conducted with L1 disadvantaged learners or intermediate grade children. This study aims to fill in the gap and investigate how the story structure instruction affects students’ vocabulary learning, story reading and writing. Participants of this study were 25 fifth grade students from an elementary school in Taichung County. Data of the study were collected from pre- and post- and delayed tests, pre- and post-study questionnaires, worksheets and selective interviews. T-test was used to detect difference in students’ vocabulary learning, and story reading and writing before and after the study. Students’ interview remarks of the implemented reading and writing activities were categorized through the content analysis method. Results reveal that students performed much better after receiving the story grammar instruction; they felt fond of story reading and writing activities in SSI lessons and considered them beneficial to their learning. Being asked to write stories individually, some of them felt anxious and nervous about writing stories in English because of insufficient knowledge of words, phrases, sentences and lack of ideas to construct stories. This study demonstrates that teaching children story structure can help them to read and write stories, and suggests that future studies adopt strategies such as collaborative writing or using prompts to help students generate ideas for story writing.
