Popis: | 97 Construction industry is the economic foundation for a country, and every industry is related to it. However, external environment, such as price of steel and metal, economic fluctuation and government policy, has great impact on construction industry. In this study, we firstly categorized and analyzed the internal and external environmental changes, and then examined the differences and similarities of large contractor’s competitive advantage when they faced the environmental change in different stages. There were three types of large contractors in our study, which included single-business, vertical-integrated and conglomerate-diversified. The result showed that reducing expenditure is the basic but critical strategy for different kinds of large contractors when they confront with harsh environment. Large contractors cut down management cost through examining every detail of administration system and talent selection constantly. On the other hand, the environment often changed rapidly and the strategy and operation of firm would be different in each phase. Diverse operation model was the main factor for all difference. Single-business contractors concentrated only a few fields and did not have to disperse resource. Relatively, they possesed less resource than other types of large contractors. Differential strategy, such as introducing and promoting new construction method, was applied for single-business contractors. For vertical-integrated contractors, they coordinated all upstream and downstream resources with professional capabilities and they could win the case with low price. Overall cost leadership was the main strategy for vertical-integrated contractors. Conglomerate contractors utilized lavish group resource to develop distinct distribution channel and multiple marketing strategies. Therefore, sales and marketing activity on the value chain was the main strategy for conglomerate contractors. |
