Material procurement of a steel pipe manufacturer is the case under study in this research. The minimum total inventory cost is the major objective. Information on materials flow-in and flow-out is collected from January to December, 2011. Several inventory control models are investigated in this study, including the Fixed Order Interval Control System, the Fixed Ordering Quantity Control System, and the (R, s, S) Interval Control System. A simulation model is developed as an evaluation tool which can be described as follows: first, the calculation formula for the total inventory cost is designed. The collected data are placed in the formula for evaluation of each control system and the best result would be the benchmark. A gradual increasing or decreasing search approach is used for further analysis of the control factor with the minimum total inventory cost. Finally, a comparison and discussion are conducted. It is expected that a suitable inventory control system that is can be found for the case under study .The results are useful for purchasing personnel when procuring materials.
